How to retrieve a specific gene from the HomoloGene database in NCBI?
We will first go to NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), then we will choose the homolog database in "All Databases", then we will write the name of the specific gene in the search bar and click To research. Then, all the data related to that specific gene will be displayed on the screen.

A gene is a portion of DNA on a chromosome that contains the instructions needed to make a product. Each chromosome has many genes, with humans having more than 22,000 in total. A protein is the product made by a gene. It is a molecular machine that does a specific job. A homolog is a gene similar in structure and evolutionary origin to a gene from another species.

The HomoloGene database present in NCBI provides a system for automated detection of homologs among annotated genes in genomes of several species. These homologs are fully documented and organized by homology groups. HomoloGene processing uses proteins from input organisms to compare and sequence homologs, mapping them to corresponding DNA sequences.
