Conflicts and stress at work and at home represent billions of euros in lost income and a lot of unhappiness each year.
The good news is that a lot of these problems can be avoided, but the question of course is how.
To begin with, conflicts in the workplace, at home or elsewhere, are completely normal.
Arguments happen every day and are resolved every day.
It is not the conflict itself that is harmful, but the conflict that remains unresolved.
So what can we do about it?
In this video, I will focus on 4 basic human concerns that are at the heart of most unresolved arguments and conflicts.
Using this information, all you need to do is apply what I'll call a lens and lever approach.
First, identify the core concerns that are at play, the lens or analysis step and Second, do something positive that stimulates a positive emotion, the lever.
These basic concerns are the need for appreciation, the need for affiliation, the need for autonomy, and the need for status.
Appreciation – If someone doesn't feel appreciated, do something to make them feel more appreciated.
This may simply involve positive acknowledgment confirming that you understand their concerns.
Affiliation – If someone doesn't feel like part of the team, do something positive that gives them a better sense of belonging.
Autonomy – If someone feels their opinions are not respected, find ways to include them more in the decision-making process.
And finally, status: If someone feels like their role at work is being compromised, which is so often linked to a person's sense of identity, focus on that. Find ways to recognize them and their accomplishments.
It may well be that several or all of these areas of concern are affected, but, if you can have an open and honest discussion with this person, understand what underlies any of the four main concerns expressed; Appreciation, Affiliation, Autonomy and Status, you can do something about it.
Good luck and thanks for watching.
