You don't need a barometer to predict the weather. Careful observation can be just as effective.

Step 1: Observe the clouds
Look at the clouds. If there is cloud cover on a winter night, the following day will be warm because the clouds will trap the heat from the day before. If the clouds are moving in opposite directions, expect bad weather. Dark clouds often indicate rain to come.

Step 2: Monitor Humidity
Look for signs of increasing humidity in curled leaves on trees and in front doors that stick due to swelling of the wood.

Advice
If your hair is sensitive to changes in humidity, you have a natural gift for predicting the weather.

Step 3: Observe the animals
Observe the animals. Birds often take flight when they expect good weather. Cows like to lie down when a storm comes, and ants build their hills just before the rain arrives.

Step 4: Check Air Conditions
Check atmospheric conditions. If the air smells like a compost pile, expect rain. Plants release their waste when the pressure drops, releasing their smell.

Step 5: Check the Wind
Check the wind. Strong winds indicate high pressure differences and can be a sign of an approaching storm. If your observations indicate that a storm is brewing, you should probably take shelter now!

Did you know?
The mercury barometer, which measures atmospheric pressure, was invented in 1643 and its basic principles are still used in modern barometers.
