SUMMARY
——————–

How long? 6 seconds!?

You do not believe me ? I'm sharing my personal experience (more on that in a minute), but a number of job sites such as The Ladders (check out their eye tracking story on how recruiters review resumes) say their survey indicates that employers review your CV in six. seconds. Ouch.

How do you revise the CV?

Click on. Open. Big screen Mac Thunderbolt!

Eye-Glance 1: Name please! My eyes move upward to the center. I want to see your name. Just your name and geography.

Eye-Glance 2: Next, I look at the entire top half of the first page of your resume, all at once.

Eye-Glance 3: Next, I go down the left column of the first page. I'm looking for companies you've worked for. I'm much more interested in the companies you've worked for than the positions you've held.

Eye-Glance 4: Then I look at the entire second page at once.

This whole visual escapade takes me no more than six seconds.

How do you decide whether to continue revising your resume?

Now I have to decide if I should delete the resume or if I should revise it. I emphasize the word review because anyone who has time to read your entire resume has too much time on their hands.

Want to know what I'm looking for?

What is the 5 second magic pill?!

Why did you open this post? It was one of two reasons.

Either you know and love me and thought, omigawd, Andy has another amazing article and I just have to watch (listen or read). Otherwise, you had no idea who I was, but you saw the title telling you that a guy promises you to find glory in five seconds.

I guess the latter. Whatever your reason, you need to interrupt the recruiter's mind-numbing evaluation process by immediately offering her something she'll love. This will be your analogous “title”.

She wants to know that you will bring value to her organization.

The easiest way to do this is to summarize who you are professionally – as a whole – and also highlight your (probably three) most valuable contributions.

I suggest doing this in a Career Profile section at the very top, followed immediately by a Career Highlights section immediately below.

I've already given you the exact formula and language in How to Build the Ultimate Professional Resume (http://milewalk.com/mwblog/build-ultimate-professional-resume-andrew-lacivita/).
