The 2 main ways artists get paid under art licensing:

1️⃣ Royalty Payments – where art licensing companies will pay you a percentage of each item sold to a buyer (retailer)

→ The percentage varies depending on the product category
→ The percentage is calculated on the wholesale price of the item and not the retail price

2️⃣ Lump sum payments – where art licensing companies pay you a one-off payment for the right to use your work

→ Flat rate payment is not based on sales
→ The lump sum payment may be more or less than you would pay if it were a royalty payment

Lump sum payments are attractive because you are guaranteed to receive a lump sum up front.
However, you could be wrong if sales are higher than expected.
You will need to decide which method is best for you
Of course, everything must be negotiated
