Program Overview:

The Bioethics Program at Columbia University's School of Professional Studies covers questions regarding the ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in biotechnology and biomedicine that are increasingly arising in the United States and the United States. stranger. From stem cell research to health care reform, these topics raise critical dilemmas at the intersections of law, society, culture, public policy, philosophy, religion, economics and history.

Scientists, health care providers, and policymakers grapple with how to address these complex questions, but advances in science and technology have far outpaced our ability to understand or make key decisions on these issues.

The Master of Science in Bioethics, part of Columbia University's bioethics programs, which also includes an online professional success certification and non-credit online courses, trains students in historical approaches and models, philosophical, legal and socio-scientific to meet bioethical challenges. The program prepares students to work in a variety of capacities in this new and evolving field, and includes a concentration in global bioethics – the first of its kind in the United States.

Students study with faculty from across the university, drawing on the extraordinary resources of Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, and the Department of Psychiatry. Through on-campus elective courses, students can study with faculty from the schools of Law, Journalism, Nursing, International and Public Affairs, and Arts and Sciences.

Choose Online and On-Campus Options

The program can be taken part-time or full-time, and students have the option of enrolling on Columbia's New York campus or online.

Online students use a highly collaborative and interactive social learning platform to connect with their instructors and peers. All online courses hold weekly live classroom meetings with their instructors to allow for dynamic interaction around course content. Additionally, students participate in discussion groups, collaborative and independent lessons, interactive forums, and pre-recorded videos.

Our programs are designed for maximum flexibility, and students enrolled on campus or online have access to rigorous coursework, world-class teaching from Columbia faculty, career and professional development, and feedback personal on written assignments.

Depending on your interest and schedule, on-campus students can also take online courses. International students on student visas who are planning to do so may only enroll in one online course per semester.

Switching between on-campus and online is possible. If you enroll in the online format, you may transition to the on-campus format after your first semester with administrative approval.

Note: International students who wish to transition from online to on-campus instruction should consult us about visas and other requirements as early in their decision-making process as possible. They will also need to consult the ISSO for detailed information relating to visa requirements and CPT (Curriculum Practical Training) eligibility.
