Some birds can detect the Earth's magnetic field and use it to navigate. But precisely how they do this has long remained a mystery. Now, researchers have confirmed that a protein found in birds' eyes exhibits a quantum mechanical phenomenon that makes it sensitive to magnetic fields. The researchers suggest that this mechanism could be at the origin of the birds' magnetoreception abilities.
