Cathy: So you want to know more about home security.

Customer: Yes. I just moved to this neighborhood and it seems safe, but you can never be too careful, right?

Cathy: That’s true. And today there are so many options. Not so long ago, you had to hire a company to install the hardware and monitor the system. But today, with advances in wireless technology and things like smartphones and mobile apps, any DIYer can easily install these systems. It is not even necessary to drill or drill holes in the wall.
Customer: That's wonderful. I have purchased a few different wireless alarm systems. I hope you can help me.

Cathy: Of course I can. These systems are awesome. They contain many of the same components and hardware as traditional systems – control panels, motion sensors, sirens – but these connect wirelessly and, in some cases, can contact emergency responders.

Customer: But what happens if my system is not monitored?

Cathy: Well, that's okay. There are actually systems that will send an alert to your smartphone or tablet letting you know that an alarm has gone off. Some systems will also let you know the nature of the alarm and where in the house the alarm went off.

Customer: Oh, wow. It's pretty cool.

Cathy: Yeah.

Customer: What else would you recommend?

Cathy: Well, there are a lot of things we can do outside of your home. Do you want to go see?

Customer: Let's do it.

Cathy: Let's go. Outdoor lighting is an important part of home security and is a real deterrent to crime. Motion-activated lights work best because they save energy by turning on only when triggered. Most are adjustable and allow you to adjust the range and distance and LED versions can save even more money because they are more efficient. It's a great place for one here.

Customer: It's perfect. Other ideas?

Cathy: Yeah. Another thing you can do is install a security camera. These are available in wired and wireless versions.

Customer: Wonderful.

Cathy: Wired models generally display better quality video, but they are much more difficult to install and cables can restrict where you can install them. Wireless systems can be placed anywhere and are quite simple to install. If you decide to go with wireless cameras, be sure to select those with an encrypted signal. The last thing you want to do is get hacked. One of the advantages of today's cameras is that both types can be monitored with an app, allowing you to keep an eye on your home from anywhere – on your smartphone, laptop or tablet.

Customer: That's good to know because I travel a lot.

Cathy: One more thing to look at. Let's go look at this awesome doorbell.

Customer: That's cool.

Cathy: Yes, it is. It's a doorbell with an HD camera that connects to your Wi-Fi. It has an audio system that lets you see and hear anyone at your front door, no matter where you are, using your cell phone, tablet or computer.

Customer: It's quite surprising.

Cathy: Yes, that's true, isn't it? And I think it would look great right there.

Customer: Perfect. You know, I really appreciate all your help, Cathy. Thank you so much.

Cathy: With pleasure. And thank you very much for shopping at Home Depot.
