In this video, we'll walk you through the key elements of your home network and cover the main things you need to think about when investing in your network. Let's start with what Internet service providers like Spectrum, Comcast, AT&T and others offer. Most of these Internet providers rent you a very entry-level all-in-one device that fulfills 4 roles simultaneously: modem, router, switch and wireless access point. As you might expect, by combining all of these functions into one inexpensive box, service providers make it simple and easy to connect your home to the Internet. For most of these devices, the valuable part of the box is the modem that transmits the ones and zeros from your home to the rest of the world. However, to keep costs down and everything working in one box, the rest of the parts, including the router, switch, and wireless access point, are all relatively inexpensive. That's why when your internet is installed, the technician can connect directly to the all-in-one box and show you blazingly fast speeds – but the next day your kids are getting lower resolution Netflix and your Zoom call doesn't seem all that good. just not as clear. . The modem does its job very well, but as soon as many streams reach the wireless chipset at different distances, the system seems poor.

This also applies to wireless communication in the all-in-one box. Typically, a single wireless access point only communicates with one device at a time. Even if there are four of you in your house working on the Internet at the same time, a normal wireless hotspot literally has to communicate to and from each of your devices in order. Additionally, the further you move away from the device, the slower and worse the connection becomes. The bottom line is that all-in-one boxes do a reasonable job in a small house or apartment, but are generally terrible in larger homes. So what are the solutions for large homes? There are basically two main options. The best by far and the one most installed in large homes by Audio Advice and professionals like us is identical to an enterprise grade network. What we do is turn off the router and wireless access point in your all-in-one box and then connect a very fast, highly secure router which is then connected to a super fast enterprise grade switch, then we wire multiple access points. throughout your house at the switch. There are a few things going on here. First, we improve the quality level of each element of the system, because the quality of the network depends on its weakest link. The second thing that happens is that we directly connect the access points to the switch and the router. This means that all the different wireless devices you have in your home (and you have a lot more devices connected all day than you think), are now spread across multiple access points, greatly improving performance.

The last point I want to address is network health and monitoring. Very good systems like those installed by Audio Advice will continually assess the health of your network. If our system notices that you have lost internet connection or that a key item may not have returned properly following a power outage in your home, it will automatically restart itself and restart the necessary items in the correct order. So no more calling your Internet Service Provider while they tell you to turn on each device and wait 5 minutes, etc. The system does it for you. Additionally, we provide a customer phone app where you can reboot your system remotely if you are out of town. Or you can simply call our 24/7 hotline and our team will be happy to check your system for you. We can even see if houses around your house have lost internet and let you know if there is an internet outage in your area. Otherwise, we can perform remote troubleshooting for you. But frankly, these business systems are so good that we almost never get calls.
