Large quantities of CO2, water and so-called “conflict” minerals such as tin and gold are used in the manufacture of many computers.
To reduce these environmental and human rights impacts, some organizations in Japan are working to recycle and sell unused computers, even employing "refugees" who escaped the conflict to help them.
A Yokohama company is recycling and reselling some of the three hundred million electronic devices it says currently sit unused in Japan and are often thrown into trash.
A key feature of the company's so-called ZERO PC activity is that it is linked to helping refugees.
While the number of refugees in Japan is small by global standards, the company was actually created with the idea of providing work for displaced people, allowing them to feel part of their new, unfamiliar surroundings, even if they didn't speak Japanese.
The company, whose Japanese staff also speak other languages, has employed seven refugees so far, but plans to increase that number to around 100.
She also hopes to expand her business to help refugees in other countries.
