Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Android News Byte.
In 2020, Google announced a new way to distribute apps through the Google Play Store.

Instead of the classic APK file that most of us are used to, they started working on what are now called App Bundles.
This allows developers to release lighter versions of their apps, since they don't need to bundle libraries that support hardware, software, and even languages for everyone and every device.

So even though the standard APK format was quite user friendly.
This also required the application file size to be incredibly bloated.

You may have seen these Android App Bundles on websites like APK Mirror.
See package label here.
And you can see that this App Bundle includes the base APK file, a file to support a specific DPI specification, and individual files including support for different languages.

So when this app is installed from Google Play Store.
It detects your language and then downloads only the language pack you have configured on your device.

This allows applications to take up less space on our devices. . .but as you can see. . .this makes things much more complicated than just loading a single APK file.

These App Bundles have become mandatory for new applications from 2021
and that's why you might not have been able to use Android's built-in package installer to install these new types of apps.

Since websites like APK Mirror always want to offer their service.
They have started creating proprietary formats that take these individual files and package them into their own unique APK file that can be shared within the community.

These new app formats include APKS, XAPK, APKM, etc.
So it makes sense that the built-in app installer doesn't support them.

And instead, you will need to use an app like Split APK Installer from the Google Play Store for them to work properly.
However, there are third-party file managers that also support them.

For anyone who likes to download APK files to their device, this move by Google will force us to use third-party apps to install these app bundles instead of being able to use the built-in package installer.

Which makes the process a little more boring. . .but at least we still have the option to load these files on Android
It just seems like we're moving in the opposite direction that many of us would like to see Android go.
