Google is building on the “sustainability for sustainability’s sake” narrative with the Pixel 9 phones, and with the promise of 7 years of software updates, it’s tempting to take the sustainability claim at face value.

But despite Google's improvements, these phones are going to break. Screens are going to crack from accidental drops, batteries are going to wear out before the 2-year mark, and a lot of other things are going to go wrong in the meantime.
