These students are going viral for cheating. But what they do is secretly awesome.
In 2019, Elon Musk's nonprofit OpenAI created an AI considered "too dangerous" to release. It was too realistic a text generation algorithm. So OpenAI simplified it. But that didn't stop him. Over the next year, he became more intelligent and began producing human-like text.
And in 2022, it gave a few students an idea.
Using GPT-3, they could do their homework 10 times faster and still get A's. Instead of spending hours researching, they would give the AI the writing prompt, and the AI would write. With the extra time, they even do their classmates' homework in exchange for money!
So who are these students? And does this break any rules?
Well, these students must remain anonymous. The mainstream education system has not decided whether this is acceptable or not. Students say it’s a tool that makes them more efficient. But some teachers say that even if students write their essays faster, they won't improve.
