The pandemic has people around the world looking at their freezers with a new appreciation. Government-imposed coronavirus lockdowns are forcing millions of households to stock up for extended stays at home – and a large supply of non-perishable but nutritious food suddenly seems as essential as an abundance of heating oil in midwinter.

This rush to hoarding came as a shock to Rachel Drori's Daily Harvest, a subscription-based healthy food startup that sells frozen smoothies and veggie bowls. When the crisis began in the United States three weeks ago, the 37-year-old CEO began doubling her inventory and has since tapped her network of 400 agricultural suppliers to keep Daily Harvest kitchens stocked. Sure enough, as more states began requiring residents to stay home to avoid spreading the virus, sales increased.

Its strategy is to allow a generation that is too busy, too tired or too quarantined to prepare their own meals. Even before the coronavirus hit, Millennials hated cooking. According to a 2017 USDA report, Americans ages 25 to 40 spend an average of 55 minutes less per week cooking and doing dishes than Gen restaurants – and even the limitation of take-out – these millennials will have to learn to fend for themselves – or face weeks and weeks of frozen pizza.
