Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching for the Golgi. The first image shows the localization of a fluorescently labeled protein throughout the Golgi, then intense laser light photobleaches the fluorescent molecules in a limited area, and then fluorescence in unbleached areas of the Golgi quickly fills the photobleached region. This result indicates that this fluorescent protein diffuses rapidly throughout the Golgi and is neither anchored nor immobilized. For more information, see Cole et al., Science (1996) 273: 797-801.
