The NASA Capacity Building Program (CBP) collaborated with Groundwork USA to host a training series (December 2020 and April 2021) introducing satellite remote sensing and NASA resources for monitoring urban environments. The trainings provide resources, open source information, and pre-recorded and live sessions to help guide and motivate high school students across the United States to get involved in Earth science and Earth observation. Led by NASA mentors, a team of NASA interns developed live and pre-recorded sessions on remote sensing subtopics that demonstrate how satellite data can be used to understand the environment. The team provided specific case studies focusing on the urban heat island effect, urban tree cover and urban flooding. The training also covered general facts about NASA and provided professional development resources such as resume writing and interview tips.

The Applied Science program helps people around the world use NASA data to solve big problems right here on Earth. We provide support and funding to help institutions and individuals make better decisions about our environment, food, water, health and safety. Earth observation is defined as the collection of information about the physical, chemical and biological systems of planet Earth. There are many techniques for gathering information about Earth's changing climate through remote sensing, photographs, radar and sonar images, and much more! To learn more about Earth observation, be sure to check out the GEOS (Group on Earth Observations) FAQ page for more general information: https://www.earthobservations.org/g_faq.html

Remote sensing is defined as the collection of information at a particular distance. These techniques use remote sensors on satellites and aircraft that detect and record reflected or emitted energy. To learn more about remote sensing, be sure to check out NASA's Earth Data site, which provides a general overview of this type of Earth observation: https://earthdata.nasa.gov/learn/backgrounders/ remote sensing
