The rapid spread of artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies in recent years has been accompanied by a proliferation of principled ethical frameworks intended to guide their design, development, and deployment in practice. According to the UN Secretary-General's Roadmap on Digital Cooperation, there are more than 160 distinct sets of organizational, national and international AI ethics and governance principles around the world, and countless others principles related to technological ethics more generally. Despite the existence of hundreds of sets of principles, we have little evidence of their impact in practice.

This panel on Ethics in Action: Moving from Principles to Practice in Technology Ethics will explore efforts to translate principled frameworks into principled actions. Featuring perspectives from public and private sector practitioners, as well as insights from leading academic researchers focused on operationalizing AI ethics, we will facilitate cross-sector and interdisciplinary dialogue on moving from principles to practice, in accordance with the Laboratory’s mission.
