In 2021, the Integrated Watershed Management (IWM) department embarked on the development of a 10-year environmental monitoring strategy (2022-2032). The development of this strategy is essential to all parts of our operations at Kawartha Conservation and will also help guide our monitoring activities and investments in the future. To guide this strategy, the project team developed a high-level goal and clear objectives that define focus areas for the next 10 years.

The 2022-2032 Environmental Monitoring Strategy will be presented to Council at the January 2022 meeting for approval.

Aim:
Provide a cost-effective environmental monitoring network that facilitates evidence-based decision-making and provides real-time, accessible science and data to our community, while aligning with our strategic goals and those of our municipal partners .

Goals:
Develop a core database to support our climate change strategy and the strategies of our partners.

Reduce the long-term costs of our monitoring network with an efficient upfront investment.

Maximize the use of technology to enable remote data management and reduce staff resources.

Consolidate the number of sites we monitor where possible, identifying if we need new locations or opportunities to streamline existing site locations.

Provide up-to-date and, where possible, live information and data to our customers via our website and partner platforms.

Use standardized protocols across organizations when available on our network to ensure consistency in field methods and data collection.

Expand our connection and use of stakeholder data and information by sharing and collaborating.

Explore sustainable ways of working with partners to provide long-term monitoring networks.
