Over billions of years, erosion has created various shapes and sizes found on Earth today. Erosion can also occur over short periods of time, even just a few minutes, when violent events such as rainstorms wear away land materials, like sand and gravel, even causing landslides in some places. Erosion can also carry these terrestrial materials from land to nearby streams, rivers and lakes, a phenomenon known as sedimentation. Minerals such as phosphorus can also be picked up by rainwater and flow into nearby bodies of water, stimulating algae growth downstream. When soil is hydrophobic or water-repellent, an effect often seen after catastrophic fire in unhealthy forests, less water sinks into the ground and flooding can occur. With just a few materials from your home, you can set up this experiment to study the effects of wind and water on the earth. Try it now!
