One of the great strengths of the Natural Sciences Tripos is that they give undergraduates the opportunity to try topics they might never have encountered before. Earth sciences are one of them, with many students having only peripheral experience of the subject from their geography lessons. We decided to make a film featuring many important themes in Earth science, illustrating the scope and breadth of the subject and its relevance to fundamental problems in physics, chemistry and biology. The film is close to documentary style, so the viewer comes away not only knowing something about how the Earth works, but also understanding the scientific process used to gain that knowledge. We hope that we will also manage to convey some of the enthusiasm generated by Earth science research! The aim is for the film to be watched by all new NatSci students and, because we have been careful not to focus too much on Cambridge, more generally by Year 6 pupils who are thinking about what science subjects they might like study at university.
