Dunkelflaute is a German word – literally “lull” and used to describe the fear of not having enough electricity when there is no sun or wind.
Many fossil fuel advocates suffer from severe Dunkelflaute, believing that for every wind turbine or solar panel we must have fossil fuel backup generators running on standby.
Of course, that's not true, but I think it would be very helpful if energy professionals started using the term in a more practical and less emotional way, when we discuss how we are going to integrate a more variable electricity supply and maintain reliability. So we could say "what is the longest Dunkelflaute we need to plan for", and that would help us determine energy storage needs.
