Many people think that Charles Darwin was the first to come up with the idea of natural selection. However, others before Darwin described the concept, although they sometimes used slightly different terminology.

For example, Carl Linnaeus, the "father of creationist taxonomy," wrote about nature's "struggle for survival." Similarly, James Hutton wrote about the concept of natural selection. Perhaps the most influential figure is Edward Blyth, an English chemist and zoologist who wrote seminal papers on natural selection two decades before Darwin published On the Origin of Species.

Darwin distinguished himself by attempting to use the concept of natural selection to promote the idea of unlimited change. However, modern studies of natural selection have revealed that it is limited. It can only select between variations that already exist—it cannot produce the new genetic information needed for true evolutionary change to occur, such as a reptile growing feathers.
