Toshiba Hard Drive Recovery Tutorial:

This video explains a very special and extremely useful data recovery technique that we use for Toshiba hard drive recovery. Hard drive failure can occur due to many different factors and the most common physical problems are due to power surges and human errors. In fact, human error is the leading cause of hard drive failure. Toshiba, apart from the typical problems (head damage, bad sectors and faulty PCB), unlike any other hard drive manufacturer, has a very unique failure related to FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing). FDB ensures the movement/rotation of the hard drive platters, so that when the bearings fail, the drives stop or have difficulty spinning at the required speed. When this happens, the hard drive is not recognized and therefore there is no access to the data. So, how can we perform Toshiba hard drive recovery? Let's find out.

Firstly, in order to recover data from a crashed laptop, we need to confirm that the crash is actually related to the hard drive's FDB. If your laptop suddenly stops working and your hard drive is not detected in BIOS, you will need to remove the drive from the laptop. We will not touch on the topic of how to remove hard drive from laptop just because most of them have a different approach. I must say that most laptops have external access to the hard drive, so removing the hard drive is a simple task usually done by removing a few screws.

Second, we need to rule out any other problems with the hard drive before proceeding with the technique we describe in this video. Troubleshooting can be done using the hard drive adapter. As you can see, in our case we had a 2.5/" IDE adapter to connect our hard drive for testing. Listen to the sounds that the hard drive makes when powered on. Here is a rough description of the symptoms :

– Powered, no rotation, no sound at all (silent) – Dead PCB or blown fuse
– Disk spins but is not recognized – bad sectors or partition corruption
– Drive spins and clicks – damaged or contaminated read/write head
– No rotation but with a slight ticking/beep/pulsing – rolling problem
– Turns and stops with a lot of noise – bearing problem

Well, our video is directly for Toshiba hard drive rolling problem recovery. Once we have confirmed that based on the sounds the problem is indeed with the bearing, we can move on to the data recovery process. To successfully recover Toshiba hard drive and extract data from laptop hard drive with faulty bearing, we will need the following tools:

– SMT rework station (we use Hakko 850D, but any rework with a properly sized nozzle will do)
– USB adapter for your laptop's drive, preferably with an external power supply that you can turn on and off as needed.
– Imaging equipment is strongly preferred (Data Extractor, DDI, Salvation Data…)
– If you don't have an imaging device, you can try using data recovery software that has an imaging option (R-studio for example)

Remember that this technique only concerns Toshiba laptop hard drives that have difficulty spinning. You will find the exact steps of this laptop data recovery process in the video.
