From a Gresham Lecture given by Chris Lintott at Conway Hall, London

The final lecture in the series returns to the theme of how knowledge is derived from observations, considering the cosmic microwave background.

This oldest light in the Universe, emitted only 400,000 years after the Big Bang, contains the seeds of the structures we see around us and tells us about the conditions that existed at the beginning of the Universe.

It will also examine how measurements of the expansion of the Universe, made using the CMB, lead to unexpected results, creating tensions in modern cosmology.
