Have you heard of the term “thermal dome”? It is an extreme weather phenomenon that caused record temperatures and wildfires in North America and Europe for part of 2021.

Heat domes are not a new phenomenon, but they have contributed to some of the heat waves many have experienced. in summer 2021 In Western Canada, temperatures reached 49.6°C, beating the previous record by almost 5°C.

Rising temperatures caused by heating domes have left many vulnerable people struggling in stifling heat. Many have been forced to shelter in cooling centers, air-conditioned buildings, such as stadiums, where residents can work and sleep.

In this #shorts video, BBC weather presenter Abbie Dewhurst explains how a heat dome is a mountain of hot air pressing over a large area.
