(i) Solubilization – In this phase, enzymes break down complex organic components or organic wastes into simpler, soluble substances.

(ii) Acidogenesis: Monomers are converted into organic acids (e.g., acetic acid) with the help of fermentative microbes. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are produced as by-products.

(iii) Methanogenesis – Methanogens (methane producing bacteria) become active and act on various components of the microbial digestion and formation stages in the formation of biogas are given below:
