We will learn that a neutron star is the remnant of the collapsed core of a super massive star (more than 8 times that of our Sun). When a supermassive red giant fuses lighter elements into iron in its core, the resulting lack of radiation pressure causes the core to collapse into an extremely dense state containing neutrons, protons, and electrons. The extreme temperature and pressure during the implosion cause electrons and protons to convert into neutrons.
