Advance could allow ophthalmologists and other health workers to perform cardiovascular screening on the street using a camera – without the need for blood tests or blood pressure checks – according to the largest global study of this kind.
Researchers have found that AI-based imaging of retinal veins and arteries can clarify the risk of cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular death and stroke.
They say the findings could open the door to making a highly effective non-invasive test available for people at medium to high risk of heart disease, which does not need to be carried out in a clinic.
