Opened in 2009 at Santa Monica State Beach, it is Southern California's most exclusive public beach club, offering all the benefits of a private membership without the high price tag. The Santa Monica beach house sits on actress Marion Davies' former 1929 estate, a gift from her boyfriend, William Randolph Hearst. It was partially designed by Julia Morgan, best known for creating Hearst Castle in San Simeon.
Today, the pool and 7,000-square-foot guesthouse are all that remains of the original 5-acre complex, which was called the "Versailles of Hollywood." Free docent-led tours are offered by the Santa Monica Conservancy.
During your visit, start with a dip in the Annenberg Beach House pool, where stars like Clark Cable, Carole Lombard, Cary Grant and Gloria Swanson often come to swim, then head to one of six volleyball courts -ball for a game on the sand. . Volleyball courses and camps take place regularly during the summer, as well as beach soccer and tennis.
Upstairs, you can admire the ocean view on the lanai terrace or read a book in the games room. Yoga classes are offered at 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
If you're hungry, Back on the Beach Café (http://www.backonthebeachcafe.com) has a basic menu, ranging from burgers to fish tacos. Watch out for the seagulls!
A long wooden boardwalk leads directly to the beach, where you can rent a private cabana or take a surf or stand-up paddle class. If you want to go alone, the Beach House also offers SUP rental. My suggestion? Relax and enjoy the view.
