Performance art refers to works of art created through actions performed by the artist or other participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted.

In the 1960s, performance art was seen as fundamentally different from art that could be collected or exhibited in art museums. It was lively and ephemeral, challenging traditional notions of art.

But today, performance is seen more as a set of strategies available to contemporary artists, which are not intrinsically different from other art forms and do not go at all beyond what a museum can and must show.

Now accepted in the visual arts world, the term has since been used to also describe cinematic, video, photographic, and installation-based works of art through which the actions of the artists, performers, or audience are conveyed.

Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, this film reflects ideas from the online publication “Performance at Tate: Into the Space of Art” (Tate Research 2016): http://bit.ly/2lFsG5s

“Performance at Tate: Into the Space of Art” explores how concepts of art have changed in relation to recent shifts in artistic production and how artists have responded to the possibilities offered by museums.

The project features essays and case studies, and publishes audio recordings, film and video, photographs, museum materials and reviews from the Tate archives, showing the richness and depth of engagement of the gallery in performance over half a century.
