The photography trip to the Kimberley, Western Australia, focused on color and texture. One of the best ways to capture these features was with a drone. However, we wanted to take it to the next level and take some aerial photos.

After discussing our flight plan with Hilary from KAS Helicopters, we boarded one of the helicopters for a 1.5 hour flight along the coast south of Broome to explore the bay below. a tide of 0.4 meters, one of the lowest of the year. This trip with Matt and Jarrad was all about being here during high tides. The fact that we had perfect conditions is therefore no coincidence. It was a matter of planning.

We crossed creeks, mangroves and sandbars. Each of us had a camera with a lens. We had arranged to remove the helicopter doors to give us the best access to break down the ground. With this setup, we didn't want to bother with changing lenses. I had the 24-70 f4 for the Nikon Z7, the other guys had 24-105mm lenses.

Getting out of a helicopter is not for the faint-hearted. It was my first time with the doors closed. I thought I was going to be nervous. However, 1-2 minutes into the flight we were snapping photos madly, too busy to think about our situation.

We were shooting shutter speed priority with auto ISO, limited to around 400, the aperture was wide to let in light, and the ground was in roughly the same focal plane. These settings allowed us to have a fast shutter speed of 1/1250 or faster. This configuration allowed us to concentrate on finding the composition and creating the shot. There were no second chances.
