What is image rights? They were originally part of a player's contract, when playing in Italy in the 1990s, to reward a player for his off-field exploits.

Since then, they have become much more complicated. As Nick Harris explains, image rights are now so complicated that they have led to a restructuring of HMRC tax reliefs, incomplete transfers and even prison sentences for some of football's greatest players .
