Our ability to predict the weather, even if it is still imperfect, would astonish our ancestors. And decades of improvements in weather satellite technology, driven by teams of fiercely dedicated scientists and engineers, have made it possible. In this video, we speak with some of the pioneers in the field who spearheaded advances in this technology that now inform our daily planning and travel, agriculture, construction projects, and military strategy. , disaster response and air and sea travel. . We also speak with scientists who work on current weather satellites and instruments, such as those in the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) series. This video tells the story of our nation's weather satellites by highlighting some of the paradigm-shifting moments that have shaped their rich history.
