Opening a new restaurant, whether franchise or solo, is never an easy task. In this video, we'll walk you through the five most important legal steps you can take to make your new business more enjoyable and successful:

1. Choose your restaurant name, complete the appropriate registrations, and remember to register a domain and social media accounts under that name BEFORE incorporating the business.

2. Decide which business form to choose. I personally suggest incorporating a business rather than operating as a sole proprietorship. Please see our video with explanations here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v2KsJZaVE4r8&t2s and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?vL8OIJDFG3RQ&t22s

3. Make sure the location you have chosen allows you to operate a restaurant – check the “zoning” of the property with the local municipality to ensure the property is zoned to include restaurant operations. Please do this BEFORE signing a rental agreement.

4. Start LLBO (serving alcohol) well in advance. The process takes 12-16 weeks and requires extensive information and compliance requirements. The earlier you start, the better your chances of obtaining the license before starting operations.

5. Employees or contractors – decide how to work and have appropriate documentation (please see our two-part video here:

Part II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?vizrQ7fxZQio&t153s

6. Bonuses. Prepare your compliance documents – health and safety, human rights, workplace violence and harassment and more.
