1) Find the longest continuous chain of carbons
Number the carbons of this main chain. Start at the end that will result in the smallest number of substituent groups attached to the chain.
2) Number and name the substituents
If the same substituent appears more than once, use that name only once but add di, tri, etc. to indicate how much of this substituent
3) List the names of the alkyl substituents in alphabetical order (ignore and number the prefixes in this case, like di, tri and focus only on the name of the substituent).
4) Put it all together using hyphens to separate letters and numbers and commas to separate numbers.
