A catalyst is a substrate that accelerates a reaction without being consumed. Catalysts lower the energy barrier for activating a reaction without changing the equilibrium constant. In this lecture, catalysts of different types are presented, including natural catalysts and enzymes. Chemist Jingnan Lu also explains why knowledge of kinetics is important for the development of biofuels.
