This is a cultural impasse that could have many consequences, but as a leader, it's up to you to get the best out of your team, no matter where they are.
So if you lead a remote or hybrid team (meaning some in the office and some remote, or sometimes remote and sometimes in the office), here are some tips for leading your team effectively.
Level playing field: If some are remote, try bringing everyone together via video instead of having some in person and others virtually.
Create a safe environment for informal discussions – Balance corporate security with nanny state surveillance. Chat on Slack, but let colleagues have “out-of-band” channels to socialize, chat, chat, and maintain their social order.
Spend time in person with the team every once in a while – You go to their house – see them in their hometown, have everyone go to a trade show together, bring everyone to the company building (if there is one) from time to time.
