The open science universe is expanding with many scientific disciplines, organizations and policy makers committing to openness, accessibility, transparency and reproducibility. Despite general calls and efforts for open science, practical guidance on steps hydrologists can take to integrate open science principles into their research is limited. In this discussion, the open principles of hydrology proposed by Hall et al. (2022) will be presented and explained. Additionally, examples of concrete steps, tips, tools, and resources for overcoming barriers to starting or advancing open science practices will be provided.
