NCAA Football was an American football video game series developed by EA Sports in which players control and compete against current Division I FBS college teams. The series is a little brother of the Madden NFL series.

In July 2013, the NCAA announced that it would not renew its licensing agreement with Electronic Arts due to an ongoing legal dispute regarding the use of player likenesses in games. However, this agreement covers only the use of the NCAA name and associated logos, not those of individual schools and conferences, which are negotiated individually or through the Collegiate Licensing Company. CLC simultaneously announced that it would extend its existing licensing agreement with EA through 2017, ensuring that EA Sports could continue the series without the NCAA brand. However, the series was suspended in September 2013, following three major conferences withdrawing their brand licenses from EA and uncertainty surrounding the outcomes of lawsuits involving the use of player likenesses in the game. However, EA Sports still trying to revive the series.

Players' real names and exact likenesses are not used in-game. Although the Madden NFL series uses real player names and likenesses, those players are compensated for the use of their likeness. Due to NCAA restrictions on athletes' amateur status, names are not permitted. Additionally, current college players cannot be used as cover athletes. Instead, each cover features a player whose college eligibility ended the season before the game's release, wearing their old college uniform. The only two exceptions are the Wii version of NCAA Football 09, which featured Michigan State University mascot Sparty on the cover, and NCAA Football 06, when Desmond Howard was featured on the cover posing for the Heisman Trophy at the during his career at Michigan, although he has not played for Michigan in over 15 years.

Although EA Sports does not claim that players in the game represent real players, jersey number, position, height, weight, state of origin, and ethnicity are aligned with real players. Fans of a particular team are sure to recognize their favorite players (for example, in NCAA Football 2014, the #2 QB of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels would match up with QB Bryn Renner). Actual use of a player's real name would be in violation of the NCAA's student-athlete policy. Amateur “roster builders” often manually combine player names and upload a roster file to the built-in roster sharing system. Since version 09, EA has integrated the EA Locker feature which allows remote roster sharing online via Xbox Live or PlayStation Network depending on the console.
