12 Years a Slave is a biography of Solomon Northup (1808 – c. 1864-1875)

Twelve Years a Slave is the memoir of a born free African American from New York who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. After being held captive for twelve years on a series of Louisiana plantations, he was finally released and reunited with his family. Solomon Northup published his memoirs the year of his rescue, in 1853, and, coming shortly after, that of Harriet Beecher Stowe /"Uncle Tom's Cabin/
